Celebrating Those Who Lift Our Communities

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in an event sponsored jointly by America First and the Las Vegas Raiders at the stunning new Allegiant Stadium. The gathering was held to recognize the finalists in the inaugural Raiders Small Business Showcase Presented by America First Credit Union, which highlights outstanding contributions to our communities by small businesses.

Over the course of the evening, I was able to speak with many impressive small business owners and see the sizable and varied impact they have on their communities. This year’s grand-prize winner was Felicia Parker, the owner of Any Occasion Baskets. Despite abruptly losing a majority of her business when the pandemic struck, Felicia and Any Occasion Baskets decided to utilize the business to buoy others where they could and give back to the community and people they serve. During the interruption, Felicia began providing gift baskets to first responders, healthcare providers, and other front-line workers who were laboring under intense pressure to help others make it through the crisis. I was profoundly touched by her story and thrilled to be a part of honoring her efforts.

As the showcase’s winner, Felicia and her business were awarded a single-season sponsorship with the Raiders worth more than $100,000, which includes signage inside Allegiant Stadium during Raiders home games, professionally produced radio spots, and digital promotions across Raiders.com and the Raiders mobile app. I’m proud of America First’s support of small businesses and appreciate working with a partner as influential as the Las Vegas Raiders to help showcase these small but integral organizations.

October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and I couldn’t let it pass without taking the chance to recognize and celebrate the female entrepreneurs and women-owned and -led businesses that are such a vital part of our economy and communities. At the heart of just about every thriving community in our country, you’ll find at least two essential elements: strong women and strong small businesses. So many of the women who own and operate small businesses share their passion, perspectives, and leadership, and as they do, they elevate everyone and everything around them to greater heights and new opportunities.

When I started working at America First in 1987, only 22% of small businesses in the United States were owned by women. However, in the 34 years since, that number has nearly doubled, and the rate at which women are starting new businesses is twice that of the national average of all businesses being started.

I hope that during this month and beyond, you’ll join me in supporting women’s small businesses. One of the best ways you can do that is by buying the products and services those businesses offer and then sharing your positive experience with others, especially through your favorite social media platforms. And if you own, operate, or are thinking about starting a small business, our expert Business Services team would love to help you take advantage of the many great resources that are available to small and women-owned businesses. America First Credit Union Opens New Branch in Cache Valley

LOGAN, Utah – July 16, 2021 – Utah’s largest credit union, America First Credit Union, opened a new branch location on July 12, replacing the North Logan Walmart Branch which closed on July 10. Located off 1400 North in Logan, it’s the first branch in the city located in a stand-alone building.

The 3,200-square-foot building includes multiple teller stations, coin machine, cash advance equipment, instant issue card machine, cash recyclers, and 24-hour drive-up ATM. A complete suite of financial services, such as membership enrollment, mortgages, notarization, deposits, withdrawals, and loans, are available to members. It’s located at 127 East 1400 North in Logan and operates Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A financial counselor will be on site at the branch to be a resource for students and other members who are looking to improve their financial literacy, manage student loans, and improve their financial security. This one-stop shop offers students a route to financial success and support. America First team members will also be on hand to assist members with new checking/savings accounts as well as personal and business loans.

Wayne Jorgensen, who has worked for America First for 24 years, serves as the location’s branch manager. An avid lover of all things Aggies, Jorgensen has been involved in Cache Valley as a leader and speaker for various youth groups and personal finance classes at Utah State University. As manager of the not-for-profit cooperative institution, he embodies the credit union’s value of people helping people.

“Our new location provides community members and students with one-stop access to our friendly financial experts and superior services,” said Jorgensen. “Like many in our community, I have deep family ties to Cache Valley and have a great fondness for the people here. I love helping my neighbors, friends and members in the community succeed in their financial journey.”

Las Vegas-based gift baskets company receives Las Vegas Raiders sponsorship assets valued at $100K

Las Vegas – America First Credit Union (AFCU) and its partner, Las Vegas Raiders, announced today that Any Occasions Baskets (AOB), a Las Vegas-based gift baskets company, is the grand-prize winner of their inaugural Small Business Showcase following the recent live finals event in the Shift4 Club at Allegiant Stadium. AOB received single-season sponsorship assets valued at $100,000 to promote the company’s mission to deliver unique and thoughtful gifting experiences. The sponsorship includes signage inside Allegiant Stadium, Raiders home game tickets, radio spots, and digital promotions from the Raiders’ website and mobile app.

In addition to the Small Business Showcase, ACFU and the Raiders share an expansive multiyear partnership, including the credit union named as the Raiders’ exclusive credit union and official debit card partner, as well as shared charitable donation efforts. In March 2021, America First Foundation and the Raiders Foundation donated $20,000 to support SafeNest, Nevada’s largest nonprofit dedicated to ending the epidemic of domestic violence.

America First Charitable Foundation Awards $10,000 in Scholarships to Students For Their Efforts To Improve the Community

Ten high school seniors and college students awarded for academic excellence and community service

RIVERDALE, Utah – July 1, 2021 – The America First Charitable Foundation Scholarship Program has awarded $10,000 in scholarships to 10 graduating high school seniors and undergraduate students at two- and four-year technical colleges or universities who share a passion for helping others. The Foundation selected students who embody a people-helping-people philosophy — those who play an active role in giving back to their community, whether through volunteering or other meaningful contributions of time, effort, and care.

Of the 10 honorees, two have already completed their first year of college and eight will be freshman this fall; five of the students had a 4.0 GPA. The students participated in many on and off campus activities, both including school programs such as La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, Student Body Officers and National Honor Society, and volunteered in their communities with organizations like Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a Sheriff’s Office Cadet Program and the Tyler Robinson Foundation.

“We are excited to award each of these deserving students with scholarships,” said Thayne Shaffer, president/CEO of America First Credit Union. “We want students to focus on academic success and giving back to the community instead of worrying about paying tuition or buying books. One way we way help students thrive in higher education is through the annual scholarships. “It is critical that all capable citizens do their part in people helping people,” said scholarship recipient Niki Bell from South Weber, Utah, entering her first year at Western Wyoming Community College. “We thrive most as a community when we help one another and work together to solve our problems. I believe that any effort to try to help someone or make a difference can go a long way. Every small action leads to a change in our community.”

Recently, I have been reflecting on my first days at America First Credit Union. From the beginning, I knew it was a special organization, and I quickly recognized that a strong, common thread wove through each meeting, strategy discussion, and decision. That thread was the shared desire and consistent effort to always do what was best for our members. It is one of the aspects I love most about our credit union, and a large part of what has kept me here for 33 years.

Much has changed throughout that time. As we have worked together to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date financial solutions to our members, I have seen everything from the addition of core services like checking accounts and mortgage lending, to the introduction and continuing enhancement of our many cutting-edge digital services.

When I began here in 1987, we had fewer than 150,000 members. Now, we have almost 1.2 million. Our branch network has grown with our membership, and our 128 and counting locations help us serve communities across four states. America First has been able to adapt in countless ways to best meet the individual needs of our members.

Incredibly, the pandemic of the last year and a half necessitated an even faster increase in our evolution. Like it did to most financial institutions, 2020 challenged us to find new, more flexible, more convenient, and more efficient ways to provide access to the financial resources on which you, your families, and your businesses rely.

Thanks to the forward thinking of our technology group, when the world unexpectedly began to shift, we were ready to serve you remotely through world-class online and mobile services. In addition, over the course of just a few short weeks, we had over 1,500 employees working from home—quadruple the previous number—further safeguarding the health and safety of our staff and members and protecting our ability to serve you.

Now as summer begins, it is a relief to see signs that our neighborhoods, businesses, and communities are becoming free to open back up. After a difficult year, we enthusiastically look forward to working even more closely with you to help you reach your current and future financial goals. The world of personal finance has grown increasingly complex and digital, and we are continually expanding our ability to let you interact with the credit union in the way that best works for you.

Despite the many changes America First has made over the years, one thing remains as it has always been: our sole focus is serving our members and helping to meet your unique financial needs. America First Credit Union and Vegas Golden Knights Celebrate Teachers With “Game-Changer” Award

LAS VEGAS (May 20, 2021) – For the fourth year in a row, America First Credit Union and the Vegas Golden Knights honored teachers in the Clark County School District with a special award. The Game-Changer program awarded four outstanding teachers who made a positive impact in the classroom and in the lives of students each with a $1,000 grant that will help to improve their classrooms.

Winners were celebrated with a private lunch.

Winners include:

Melissa Finnan of Grant Sawyer Middle School

  • Finnan goes out of her way to make all students feel like family. She created a giving box with shampoo, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes in her locker room so students could take anything they need at home. With the grant, she will continue to provide anything she can for her students to make them feel at home.

Stacye Tesh of Bozarth Elementary

  • Tesh was nominated for her unwavering dedication to her first- and second-grade autistic students. She is just one of 54 national board-certified teachers in Southern Nevada for special education, and continues to attend lectures and seminars online to further her knowledge about her practice. Tesh’s main goal with her students is to teach them basic behavior skills to join their peers in general education classes.

Shane Goffstein of Wayne Tanaka Elementary School

  • Goffstein encourages each of his first-grade students to realize their potential. He creates reading groups during the pandemic and focuses on improving his student’s different reading levels. He uses his personal funds to ensure that students have all the resources needed to succeed.

Sasha Jones of Jerome Mack Middle School

  • Jones runs an exceptional drama program for grades six through eight. In a year where being face to face with students was challenging, she went above and beyond the call of duty for her students. Her drama and anime club gained a ton of traction this year through interactive, virtual events like streaming movies, television shows, and “live performances” of other theater departments across the district. Jones even used her own money and resources for lighting, sound and décor for her theater space.

The credit union will accept new nominations around the start of the 2021/2022 hockey season.

America First Credit Union, Young Automotive Group 12,500 Pantry Pack Challenge feeds hungry kids

America First Credit Union, America First Charitable Foundation, Young Caring for Our Young, and the Young Automotive Group assembled 500 pantry packs at America First Credit Union Operations Center, one of 24 assembly events happening in Utah and Idaho.

Riverdale, UT – May 18, 2021 – America First Credit Union, America First Charitable Foundation, Young Caring for Our Young, and the Young Automotive Group teamed up to assemble 12,500 pantry packs to feed hungry kids in Utah and Idaho. Throughout April and May, America First Credit Union and 24 Young Automotive Group locations in Utah and Idaho assembled 500 pantry packs each.

With one in five kids being food insecure, it means many don’t have anything to eat on weekend when school lunch and breakfast aren’t available. The pantry packs will be used by local schools and food services to sustain youth over the weekend.

“We don’t want see a single child go hungry over the weekend when they don’t have access to school food services,” said Thayne Shaffer, America First President and CEO. “We appreciate Young Automotive Group for being our partners in this great effort to make sure we’re giving those basic needs to those in our community who need the assistance.”

Pantry packs are prepackaged, gallon-sized zip lock bags with specific, easily purchased items. The packs contain six meals and four snacks. Each costs an average of $5, which means a child can be fed for less than someone would spend to buy a movie ticket.

America First Credit Union Announces Winners of $5,000 Teacher Grant Contest

RIVERDALE, Utah – May 14, 2021 – America First Credit Union announced winners of the $5,000 grant awarded to ten K–12 teachers elevating youth financial literacy in Utah and Nevada. The grants will help fund projects for teachers.

To wrap up Teacher Appreciation Week, May 3–7, America First Credit Union dropped by West Point Jr. High to surprise Kristy Larsen with a congratulatory announcement.

Today’s grant awards are the latest in a series of actions that the credit union has taken to elevate youth financial literacy. In February, the credit union announced FUNDamentals, a customizable financial literacy program created for K–12 students and teachers. (CLICK HERE to read the announcement.) This free program empowers teachers and offers a customizable program, unlike many one-size-fits-all programming dictated by other providers.
